How to Select Your First Feather Fans! - hotfans

How to Select Your First Feather Fans!

Choosing your first feather fans is easier when you compare the factors that actually affect handling: fan type, size, layer count, stave count, weight and whether you need one fan or a pair.

1. Start With How You Will Use the Fans

For learning basic opening, closing, grip and two-hand control, a single-layer ostrich feather fan is usually the simplest place to start. If you already have experience and want more coverage, consider a 2-layer style. Three- and four-layer fans create a fuller visual effect but also add weight.

Browse Beginner / Single-Layer Feather Fans or use our Feather Fan Buyer Guide for a fuller comparison.

2. Check Whether the Listing Is One Fan or a Pair

Do not assume every listing contains two fans. Read the product title and description carefully. A pair should be listed as a left-and-right set, while some products may be sold as a single fan.

3. Compare Size and Stave Count

Overall fan dimensions and stave count both affect how a fan feels and how widely it opens. For example, Viva Feathers offers beginner ostrich fan sizes including 10-stave 24" × 41", 12-stave 25" × 45", and 14-stave 180° 25" × 50" styles.

Choose the size you can control comfortably rather than simply selecting the largest option.

4. Understand Layer Count

Layer count describes how feather material is arranged on the fan. More layers generally create more visual coverage and fullness. They can also increase the weight and change how the fan moves, so compare the construction shown on the individual product page.

5. Choose the Stave Material

Viva Feathers uses acrylic / PMMA and aluminum staves across different fan styles. The available material depends on the product. If you are comparing stave options for a custom project, check the exact product specifications or contact us before ordering.

6. Choose Your Color

Many feather fans are available in multiple colors, and some styles can be made in custom or mixed colors. Use the Custom Feather Color Chart as a starting point. Natural feathers and dye lots can vary slightly, and screen colors are only a reference.

7. Plan Around Your Deadline

Many feather products are prepared after an order is placed. Regular orders generally require about 3–5 business days of processing, special-color or custom-dyed orders about 7–10 business days, and larger or more complex custom orders about 10–15 business days before shipping.

For a fixed event date, review our Estimate Delivery Time and Shipping & Rates pages before ordering.

After Your Fans Arrive

Feathers can look compressed after shipping. Gently shake the fans and allow the feathers to relax in a clean, dry area. Store them without heavy objects pressing on the feathers. For basic handling and storage guidance, see How to Use Feather Fans for Dance Practice.
